If you’re looking for a great foodie experience while in Lisbon, head straight to the famous (and original) Time Out Market.
With stalls from some of the city’s best restaurants and chefs, there’s something for everyone at Lisbon’s Time Out Market, including seafood dishes, hamburgers, donuts, Asian fusion, and traditional Portuguese fare.
Our best tip is to get there just before the lunch or dinner rush so you have time to wander through the stalls, order a few dishes, and enjoy a delicious meal without having to fight others for a seat.

The Best Food Stalls at Time Out Market Lisbon
It’s overwhelming (trust us, we felt the same way) to think about visiting every single stall just to sample a few small plates from each.
Whether you’re living in Lisbon or are just stopping in for a visit, here are some of our favorite and consistently top-ranked food stalls in Time Out Market Lisbon to try first if you’re short on time.
Croqueteria
This unique eatery offers deliciously inventive croquettes with a variety of fillings. One of the most popular croquettes is their famous cuttlefish and ink. However, if you’re not into seafood, then they do have other options available.
The appeal of this tasty treat at Croqueteria? The outside is perfectly crispy, while the inside is creamy and delicious.
Ultimately, if you’re visiting the Time Out Market Lisbon and are only interested in appetizers or are actually trying to taste your way around the stalls, this is a great place to start, as their croquettes aren’t too large and filling (but they are full of flavor!).
Miguel Castro e Silva
Miguel Castro e Silva is a renowned chef in Lisbon who has gained international recognition for his innovative Portuguese cuisine. At Time Out Market Lisbon, he offers a taste of his culinary prowess.
Here, Chef Miguel combines traditional Portuguese ingredients with unexpected flavors and techniques, creating dishes that delight the palate and surprise the senses. From Malandrino rice to delectable meat dishes, Miguel Castro e Silva’s offerings at Time Out Market Lisbon are well worth trying.
Our top tip? Try his francesinha.
Henrique Sá Pessoa
Henrique Sá Pessoa, the Michelin-starred chef behind Lisbon’s acclaimed Alma restaurant, has opened a culinary spot at Time Out Market Lisbon. There, he offers simple yet delicious dishes such as semi-salted cod with chickpea puree and a crispy suckling pig sandwich.
If you’re looking for a taste of Portuguese cuisine in a trendy, modern setting, Henrique Sá Pessoa’s stand at Time Out Market is the place to go. Make sure to try his mouth-watering desserts as well—we love the coconut mousse.
Manteigaria
Where can you get the best pasteis de nata in Lisbon? It’s up for debate, and while many people say the best are in Belém, Manteigaria in Time Out Market Lisbon offers some pretty delicious custard treats as well.
When we first moved to Lisbon, a tour guide once told us that you should never pay more than €1 for a really great pasteis de nata.
Despite being in a pretty tourist spot, the delicious tarts from Manteigaria are only €1 (although you’re definitely going to want to get the box of six for €6).
Ground Burger
Hungry for an American-style burger in Lisbon? Try Ground Burger. While there are other locations in the city, the one inside the Time Out Market is a great introduction to this local chain.
Expect to enjoy mouth-watering burgers made from certified Black Angus beef that gets sandwiched between fresh-baked buns and some of the best fries we’ve found in the city so far (they’re crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside).
They offer vegetarian options, which was nice for us (it’s a decent veggie burger). Still, if you’re not interested in the standard hamburger, you can try their massive lobster burger or their incredibly messy chili burger.
Crush Doughnuts
If you haven’t had enough yet and still have room for dessert, stop at Crush Doughnuts. Or, since the market opens daily at 10 am, you can head inside to pick up some donuts as part of your breakfast spread at a nearby hotel or Airbnb.
This brand was born from the Ground Burger brand, which is why it’s so popular among American tourists. However, we can’t deny that they’ve got some seriously tasty donuts. The dough is brioche dough that’s raised for 24 hours before being loaded up with cream filling, cream cheese frosting, and delectable garnishes.
If you’re looking for something super sweet, get the crème brûlée donut.
Tips for Visiting Time Out Market Lisbon
The best tip we have for anybody visiting the Time Out Market Lisbon for the first time is to come with an empty stomach. With dozens of restaurants, finding something to eat won’t be a problem.
Likewise, don’t forget to try some of the famous Portuguese delicacies, like pasteis de nata or bacalhau. While you can find slightly more authentic Portuguese food outside of a hot tourist spot like the Time Out Market, there are certain stalls that offer pretty authentic flavors.
Plus, you can’t visit Time Out Market Lisbon and not try a pasteis de nata.
Aside from coming hungry, we suggest you arrive as early as possible before each big meal. The first time we went was on a Sunday evening around 7 pm, and it was nearly impossible to move around inside the market, let alone order. The market stays full pretty much all day, but we’ve seen it look far less crowded slightly before the lunch and dinner rush.
Additionally, make sure to check out the events happening at the market. From cooking demonstrations to live music, there is always something going on.

If you’re looking for stunning water views where you can enjoy a cocktail or two and let your food settle, then cross the plaza and spend a couple of hours at Javá Rooftop Bar & Lounge. It’s one of our favorite rooftop bars in Lisbon for watching the sunset.
If you want to walk off the food and still enjoy a night out, then enjoy a leisurely walk up to the infamous Bairro Alto neighborhood and visit one of the many bars for a cocktail or coffee. Just slightly northwest of Time Out Market Lisbon, you will also find the district of Chiado, where you can spend some time shopping at the Armazéns do Chiado.
However, one of our pro tips for an evening out at Time Out Market Lisbon is to get your food to go and enjoy the sunset along the water next to Doca da Ribeira das Naus, or even Praça do Comércio. We got pizza from Zero Zero one evening, for example, and took it to the waterfront to enjoy watching the sunset over the bridge to the west.
If you don’t live in Lisbon and are only visiting for a few days, it’s a great way to enjoy the best of both worlds: indulge in great food at Time Out Market Lisbon while enjoying the sights nearby (of which there are plenty in Baixa).
