For adventure travelers, Interlaken, Lauterbrunnen, and Grindelwald are the perfect destinations. Nestled amidst the Swiss Alps, these towns provide endless opportunities for hiking, kayaking, cycling, skiing, and paragliding. With their picturesque mountains, gushing waterfalls, and serene lakes, these two places offer an adrenaline-filled experience surrounded by some of the country’s most impressive views.
Interlaken, which, as its name suggests, is between lakes, is smack dab in the middle of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Insider Tip: We’re not going to explore Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald in this guide, as they’re part of the same region as Interlaken and close enough to explore together. We stayed in Lauterbrunnen when visiting the Bernese Oberland region and found it to be slightly too sleepy to be worth it. Instead, we’d recommend staying in Interlaken and taking day trips to Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and the surrounding areas.
Apart from extreme sports, Interlaken boasts charming attractions like the Harder Kulm, a mountain viewpoint offering panoramic views of snow-capped peaks, majestic glaciers, mountains, and surrounding lakes. If you have time to do one thing in Interlaken, Harder Kulm should be at the top of your list (the views are better than in any photo you’ll find online). Similarly, tourists often explore the historic Höhematte Park, visit JungfrauPark for interactive experiences, or simply wander through the charming streets lined with shops, restaurants, and cafes.
